Social evils like dowry deaths and suicides are on the rise,
leaving many hapless women and children in the grip of a cruel
fate. Many of them are also affected badly due to growing
economic and social woes and increasing gender inequality.
As a result, in July 1999, GEMS Foundation has established two
homes, one at Parassala, near Thiruvananthapuram and another at
Kalliyode, Nedumangad, for destitute / orphaned girls and
deserted/battered women and widows, in an effort to rehabilitate
them socio-economically. Ten houses were constructed in a land
area of approximately 20000 sq.ft with adequate space for play
ground facility and a garden for growing vegetables.
Free food, education, clothing, medical aid and accommodation
are provided to more than 60 poor girls and women. In addition,
training is also arranged in Fine Arts like classical dance,
instrumental music etc. Medical Camps are also conducted
periodically to monitor the health of the residence.
